The Power of Hiring an Agent Who Has Superior Negotiation Skills

Whether you are buying or selling, our current market requires a new set of negotiation skills. Buyers have plenty of homes to choose from and many feel they are in a better position than sellers. On the other hand, sellers are always working to get as much as they can for their homes and some aren’t as motivated as buyers may think. This is a difficult and sometimes confusing market for buyers and sellers and emotions are running high. Your agent’s negotiation skills will likely make or break your real estate transaction, so make sure you work with an agent who has been trained in negotiation.

Most people, including real estate agents, are not trained in negotiations and they learn to negotiate by watching others, doing what comes naturally, or by trial and error. These methods of learning don’t work well when it comes to negotiations.

In regards to watching others…what works for one person may not work for another. There are huge differences between negotiators including points of view, appearance, background, experience, education, etc. However there are some fundamentals that work for everyone.

Doing what comes naturally will work in some scenarios, but not negotiation. For example, emotions come into play in every real estate transaction. Just like buyers and sellers, agents get emotional because they too want a transaction to happen. Frequently they negotiate based on their feelings or emotions. These feelings and emotions come naturally and if the agent doesn’t control them in order to focus on your interest, they will not succeed in negotiating the best deal for you!

And lastly, who wants an agent who is learning to negotiate by trial and error? Your agent will be on the front lines of the negotiation process and the way they present your offer or deal with a buyer’s agent is critical to the success or failure of your transaction.
